The basic differences with the four door was more rear room and a longer wheelbase.

It was initially only made available as a 2-door sedan however a 4-door was quickly added for model year 1971 along with a vinyl roof option. The idea was easy manufacturing and low cast maintenance a win-win for Ford and the consumer. The base model was marketed at only $1,995 which back up the Ford Motor Company message of a simple and inexpensive car. With a long hood and fastback roof it more resembled the Mustang than what many considered a compact should look like. The Maverick would become Ford’s compact car entry although larger than other competitors, Ford would later replace it with the Pinto for that category.Īlthough a compact car the Maverick features a muscle car look and feel. The Maverick design was based on the earlier Falcon that was phased out due to the Mustang’s popularity. The name was derived from the word for unbranded range animals with the emblem featuring a long horned cow head. The Maverick was originally designed to compete with other compact imports such as the VW Beetle and other Japanese contemporaries. In addition it was better selling than the 1970 model year Mustang which only sold 200K that year. Over 579,000 Mavericks were made in 1970 which was almost as many as the iconic Mustang’s first year of 619K. It was manufactured and assembled in the US, Venezuela, Canada and Mexico along with in Brazil from 1973-1979 specifically for that market. The Maverick was a nameplate used by Ford Motor Company for their compact car made from 1970 through 1977 for the North American model years.
